After months of following Twitter, along with other social marketing trends, I finally decided to test the waters and push information out with another platform. For consumers, trying to keep up with all the interactive and social networking platforms can seem daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. I recently learned from coworkers that I could combine my Facebook updates with my tweets through an application called TweetDeck.

TweetDeck is great! In one application you can tweet, follow other tweets, update your Facebook status, search for friends, etc.

So on my first tweet via TweetDeck, I communicated the following:

The link in my tweet takes you to Recycleme.org, which is a very cool Web site that promotes the awareness of organ donation in Canada.

A few days later, just for the heck of it, I searched my handle (@JoJoReed) on Twitter and found that @SutterGroup had tweeted and posted a blog about Recycleme.org and thanked me for sharing the site.

After a little bit of research, I determined that The Sutter Group’s Twitter account is managed by a friend of mine. His Twitter page has 914 followers - many more than my measly 26. So, because of my post and my friend retweeting my post, my message was seen by at least 940 people on Twitter. But it doesn’t stop there!! The Sutter Group’s blog gets more than 2,500 hits a day. This doesn’t even include all of the people that share The Sutter Group’s blog posts on Facebook and anyone else who may have retweeted the posts. How amazing is it that I thought my message about the importance of organ donation was seen only by my 26 followers when really it could have been seen by close to 3,500 people or more.

Social media is not something that companies can ignore any longer. This personal experience demonstrates the domino effect and reach that can be achieved in this new social media space.
